Holmes County Quilt Block Story Twenty-three retired teachers met in Killbuck OH in the home of Rod and Faye Franks to organize the last chapter of RTA from the East Central Ohio Teachers' Organization, . The founding members had an average of 33.8 years of teaching experience. Several began their teaching at age 18 with full certification. Many had their career interrupted by war duties or by marriage. Earlier local policy prohibited married women from teaching, but the scarcity of teachers in the 1940's and 1950's brought about a change in that policy. The first officers were of Holmes County RTA were: President, J. J. Weltmer; Vice-President, Charles Sigrist; Treasurer, Corinne Snyder; Secretary, Ferne Palmer. Many retired teachers choose to remain in Holmes County with its conservative agricultural environment, beautiful green rolling hills and scenery and small communities providing all the essentials for daily life. Retired teachers hold many leadership positions in community and county service organizations and groups with their talents and influence reaching statewide and nationwide. The chapter administers the PM Graham Scholarship Fund to one of its former members giving $1,500 scholarships to 10-15 Holmes County students yearly to attend Wooster College or Kent State University. Holmes County is now consolidated into two school districts, East Holmes Local and West Holmes Local. The Holmes County Chapter carries a membership of around 65 members as of 2007. |
